Christian Evangelism targets Asians in Nairobi

We attended one such evangelilst session, on 6th May 2000 held at 'Solid Rock Boutique' on the second floor of Rank Xerox House.  We came to know of this gathering through leaflets distributed by this group in Ngara.  These gatherings are only aimed at Asians, mainly Hindus.

We reached the venue at 4.00 p.m. by which time already a group of 15 Hindus was gathered.  The three of us were newcomers.  A charming and good-looking middle aged Ismaili lady was preaching using slides to aid her sermon. She is obviously a Christian convert from Ismaili community.  Her argument was, " Asians are suffering from insecurity, loss of business etc. because they do not believe in Christ". Note that millions of black African Christians are facing a worse and hopeless situation here in Kenya today.  But this preacher lady seemed not at all concerned about their welfare.  She just ignored the contradiction between their poverty and their belief in Christ. Otherwise she should say that their poverty is because of their belief in Christ.  The people gathered there, all seemed to come from well-to-do background and the majority of them were ladies.

The room was decorated with chunis and flowers and the lady preacher was dressed in a sari.  There were no Christian symbols in the room such as a picture of Christ, Cross or Mother Mary etc.  The seating arrangement was made on the floor. (as is done in  our temples) with a few chairs provided as well.  Only Diyas and incense sticks were missing; otherwise one may feel that he/she was actually sitting in a temple.  This setting of a familiar atmosphere was a deliberate attempt not to scare away first-timers like us.

As is always the case, the preacher lady bashed other religions, including Islam, to try and get across her message.  She claimed, "Gods like Rama and Prophets like Mohammed and Ali were all man-made and were long dead.  Only Jesus is the true living God."  Jesus Christ is referred to as 'ISHU PRABHU' so as to make him acceptable to Hindus.  She also claimed, "I  do not intend to make any one a Christian, rather I want him/her accept Christ as their saviour and the only way to salvation."  During the conversation we were having with one of the gentlemen present there, he let it slip that their aim was to convert Hindus to Christianity.

Advice to Kenyan Hindus
Therefore all Hindus are advised to watch out for such evangelists who are active in affluent areas such as Parklands. South C etc.  They put on attractive attire and use sweet talk only to ensnare the Hindus in the net of Christianity.  Hindu ladies should especially be careful because they are approached first and then used to bring their men into the fold.  These missionaries use charming and attractive people especially women to attract a following.
