Does Pervez Musharraf agree that the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) is a terrorist outfit? The Pakistan president, who has time and again claimed that the militant outfits operating in Jammu and Kashmir are in fact freedom fighters, seems to have been constrained to reply in the affirmative.

The question was put to him during an interview by a foreign network yesterday. Although the suggestion that HuM was a terrorist organisation was implicit both in the question as well as the context in which it was asked, Mr Musharraf exercised the strategic option' of not contesting the US' designation of HuM as a terrorist organisation. He was quick to shed his usual rhetoric that HuM was just another group of freedom fighters struggling for the liberation of Kashmir, and agreed that it was a terrorist organisation operating not from Pakistan but Kashmir.

This obviously raises questions about whether he sees the Jaish-e-Mohammad, responsible for the powerful car bomb blast outside J&K assembly yesterday that killed 34 people, in the same light. Mr Musharraf has already put it on record that Pakistan considers Osama bin Laden a terrorist. Hence his argument that Jaish-e-Mohammad is only a group of freedom fighters would not hold water. For, one The JUI, the parent organisation of Jaish-e-Mohammad, is the notorious Deobandi Islamic organisation responsible for raising and grooming the Taliban of the five signatories - the first being Osama bin Laden himself - to the World Islamic Front Statement signed on February 23, '98 pledging jehad against 'Jews and crusaders' was none other than Shaykh Mir Hamzah, secretary of the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).

The JUI, the parent organisation of Jaish-e-Mohammad, is the notorious Deobandi Islamic organisation responsible for raising and grooming the Taliban as well as brainwashing a whole generation of Afghani youth into religious terrorism.
