A 15-year-old girl from a backward community was allegedly stripped and raped on Friday night in front of her parents in Basera village of Muzaffarnagar district by 13 armed men.

Tension prevails in this village under Chappar police station on the Delhi- Dehra Dun national highway, 35 km from Muzaffarnagar, as those allegedly responsible for the crime belong to the minority community. The happening has created a communal divide in the village.

The girl was taken to the district hospital unconscious, said a senior police officer. He said it appeared the girl's brother, Davindra, had secretly married a Muslim girl against the wishes of her family. All the 13 persons named in the report registered at the police station by the girl's father, are absconding. District SSP Navneet Sikhera said that despite day-long raids, no arrest has been made so far.

He hoped to nab them soon. Sikhera said tension had begun to simmer in the village two days before the incident, when the Muslims came to know Devindra had eloped and got married to the girl, Roshan Jahan, the daughter of his landlord. The police say Roshan Jahan's father appeared to have led the 13 men in breaking into Gyan Prakash's house.
