With more than 40 schools across the city
introducing the concept of Vedic Mathematics - till recently considered some
kind of an esoteric science - the interest in the subject is catching on.
Vedic Mathematics is an ancient system of
mathematics, a technique of calculations based on simple rules and principles,
with which any problem - be it arithmetic, algebra, geometry or trigonometry
- can be solved orally.
Workshops on Vedic Mathematics are emerging
as a novel and productive way of keeping students busy, especially during
weekends and vacations. A trend seems to be catching up fast.
Vivek Astunkar, a consultant and Vedic Mathematics
tutor in Navi Mumbai, says, "I have trained more than 5,000 students
in the past one and half years. Having conducted workshops in more than 15
schools around Navi Mumbai, I can vouch that the performance of the students
has gone up by notches."
"We train more than 500 students a year.
The competence levels of the students have certainly got better," says
Dr J J Rawal, president, Indian Planetary Society.
Maths is no longer scary for students, thanks
to this ancient science. Raj Sippy, a tutor in Govind Raj VM Academy says,
"All students trained in my academy have registered a 15 per cent improvement
in academics, especially Maths."
"The course helps students to sharpen
and speed up logical reasoning. It's almost 50 times faster than the time
taken to solve a problem with usual mathematics," said Rawal.
Daisy Misti of DPYS School in Wadala said,
"After doing a workshop on Vedic Maths, our students have shown marked
improvement in the terminal exams held soon after." The Govind Raj VM
Academy has trained over 4,000 students including three schools.
Jaya Ahuja, mother of 16-year-old Smithi is
happy with her daughter's performance at school after she attended a workshop
on Vedic Maths.
