Musharraf flaunts Pak control over terror

Gen Pervez Musharraf on Saturday openly admitted to what India has known all
along that he and the Pakistani military establishment control terrorism in
India.
In an interview to a private TV channel, Musharraf said New Delhi should withdraw
forces from three Kashmir cities - Srinagar, Kupwara and Baramulla and
the two countries would jointly ensure that there was no terrorism in the
Valley.
"Let all military move out of the cities to the outskirts and we will
ensure that there is no military inside, Pakistan will be with the Indian
government and with the Kashmiris, to ensure that there is absolute peace
and tranquility within these three cities," Musharraf, said.
This was the most blatant attempt at forcing
a solution to the Kashmir issue. The ministry of external affairs, however,
was quick to quash any such ideas. MEA spokesperson Navtej Sarna said demilitarisation
or redeployment of security forces in Jammu and Kashmir was a sovereign decision
of New Delhi and could not be dictated by any foreign government.
He said, "Such decisions are based on our assessment of the security
situation prevailing in any particular part of the country." Sarna added,
"As long as the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and in other
parts of the country is adversely affected by the phenomenon of cross-border
terrorism and violence perpetrated by Pakistanbased terrorist groups,
the government of India will fulfil its responsibility to safeguard the lives
and security of its Citizens."
Musharraf's statement comes at a time when India is recovering from the latest
round of Pak-sponsored terror attacks on the IISc campus in Bangalore. In
fact, investigations have shown that Pakistan's Lashkar-eToiba is responsible
for the Bangalore attack as it was for the Delhi blasts in October.
Musharraf has, in the last two weeks, floated several 'solutions' to the Kashmir
issue.
The demand for India to demilitarise three cities in Kashmir was also made
by Pakistan's ambassador to the US, Jehangir Karamat, in September last year
as a prelude to Musharraf's meeting with Manmohan Singh. This resulted in
adampening of the atmosphere for talks, as a result of which nothing came
out of the dialogue.
