Close on the heels of a major haul of narcotics from an IPS officer in Maharashtra, 14 kg heroin worth Rs 70 crore in international black market was found stashed in alarm clocks and baggage, belonging to two Indian nationals on board Samjhauta Express from Pakistan.

The drugs were concealed in 28 packets. The two persons arrested with the contraband have been identified as Akhtar Abbas and Sadeeqa. They belong to Muzzafarabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Additional Commissioner, Customs, Jasbir Singh Luthra said though this was not the first case of drugs smuggling on the train, it was one of the biggest seizures ever. He confirmed that the seizure was done following a tip-off and intelligence inputs.

Two other persons have been detained and are being quizzed by Customs officers. "The accused look like small-time couriers and not smugglers themselves," said Customs sources, adding that they were handed over the contraband at the Lahore station by one Sabir. "During preliminary interrogation, they said they were to be contacted by a person in Delhi. They had received an advance and the rest was to be paid by the recipient of the consignment," said the Customs officials.
