Introduction: Only One of 6 Held Produced In Court So Far

As the euphoria over Pakistan's "positive" response to the Indian dossier on Mumbai attacks dies down, it is slowly becoming clear that forcing Pakistan to act against the alleged perpetrators is going to be even tougher than getting it to admit that these attacks were planned in Pakistan.

Of the six accused Pakistan claimed to have arrested last week, only Hamad Amin Sadiq, described by Pakistan interior minister Rehman Malik as the mastermind, has been produced in court till now. Sadiq was remanded in FIA's custody for 15 days by a court. The hearing was held in Adiala jail for security reasons. However, there is still no official word on the five others said to have been arrested along with Sadiq last week. Rehman had said eight people had been named in the FIR, two of whom he did not name.

According to reports in Pakistan on Tuesday, Jamaatud-Daawa leader Nazir Ahmed was arrested but the government did not confirm this. There were reports in the Pakistani media on Sunday that LeT commanders-Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah-described by India as the chief conspirators, too, had been arrested. However, the very next day, there were reports that these two were still with the ISI. No senior government official has bothered to clear the air.

Sadiq was brought to the prison in an armoured vehicle and his face was covered with a mask. The media was not allowed to photograph him.
