In a shocking incident, which has been reported, around forty people have been involved in a drunken revelry inside a TTD guest house in Tirumala-Tirupati. Two persons, who are alleged to be associates of TTD Chairman and Liquor Baron D K Adikesavulu Naidu, are believed to have brought them in.

The executive officer of the Devasthanam has ordered a probe and committed to take severe action against the culprits after obtaining the probe report within three days.

This incident has increased the impetus in the demand for the removal of Adikesavulu from the TTD Chairman's post. The demand has started right from the day of his appointment and the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Samuel Rajasekara Reddy has been under severe criticism for appointing the 'liquor' baron as the Chairman of the most revered Devasthanam.

Alcohol, cigarette and any other kind of drugs are totally prohibited in Thirumala. A Very recently, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, who visited Thirupati to receive the Mahamahopadyaya title conferred by the Sanskrit University, criticised the government for appointing a person from the liquor industry as the Chairman of the TTD.

He opined that only those with unflinching social, ethical and religious values should be appointed to such posts connected with sacred religious institutions. He has also conveyed his concern on such persons' association with places of worship.

This is not the first time that TTD is in the news for wrong reasons. In August 2008, misappropriation of hundreds of gold coins in the Temple treasury was reported. Later, TTD's Chief Vigilance and Security Officer, who conducted the probe, recommended stringent action against the employees involved.

As a result, the custodian of the treasury was sacked and three other officials were suspended. And with the advent of the Congress government, rampant evangelical activities happened in and around Thirumala causing widespread agitations in Thirupati.

Conversion of TTD employees was reported and the Congress government even attempted to turn the great pilgrimage centre into a picnic spot with theme parks and other high-jinks. This brought the Hindu Mutt-heads and other Hindu organisations to the street and it took concerted efforts and sustained protests demonstrations to make the government drop the plan.

The then Chairman came under fire for promoting the evangelical activities, which were stopped after several agitations. A few employees belonging to other religions who were appointed during his tenure were also transferred.

Thirumala-Thirupati has borne assaults and undergone sacrileges and it is very unfortunate that the government has not bothered to streamline the functioning of the TTD. The government must change this deplorable attitude and take immediate steps to protect the sanctity of Thirumala. It must respect the sentiments of the millions of Hindus worldwide.
