A daily wage labourer was killed and five labourers were injured on Tuesday in a clash following their demand for 100 days of work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The incident took place at Raninagar block in Murhsidabad. The labourers, all Congress supporters, had gone to their village panchayat member, a CPI(M) leader demanding work. The Rapid Action Force has been posted in the area after the incident.

"According to preliminary reports, there was a clash between two groups over 100 days work. One person died due to bomb injuries and many were injured. The situation there is tense but under control. We have posted a large contingent of policemen there," said the Police Superintendent of Murshidabad.

Meanwhile, both the Congress and the CPI(M) traded charges over the issue. While the CPI(M) district secretary said that senior leaders had been sent to take stock of the situation, a local Congress leader said that the there had been no work in the area under the NREGS scheme.

A state Government report on the NREGS says in 2008-09, up to January 23, only 22 per cent of the job seeking households were provided jobs under the scheme.
