The Indian media on Monday got its first glimpse of Ajmal Kasab, the prized catch using whom the Indian Government plans to prove Pakistan's involvement in sponsoring terrorism on its soil, especially the attack on Mumbai in November 2008. The hearing was also significant for the fact that the lone surviving Mumbai attacker accepted before Sessions Judge M L Tahilyani that he was a 'Pakistani national'.

Kasab was produced in court via video conference from inside the Arthur Road prison. With a light beard and moustache and unruly hair, he appeared relaxed and composed despite the two constables standing behind him and the presence of Jail Supreintendent Swati Sathe nearby.

The man who along with his nine deceased accomplices was responsible for the deaths of over 160 people, asked the court to provide him a lawyer at the time of the trial, likely to begin inside a special court being set up inside the Arthur Road prison.

The 21-year-old, who is at present lodged inside the high security anda cell, smiled at the judge and greeted him with a 'Namaste'. Often responding in English, Kasab, who had earlier asked for a final report in Urdu did not mention the matter before the judge on Monday.

A transcript of the hearing:

Judge Tahilyani: Naam?

Swati Sathe gestures him to keep the mike down
