Use of strict act against Varun unjustified: BJP

Author: TNN

In sharp contrast to its hesitant defence of party candidate Varun Gandhi, the BJP on Monday came out strongly against the invocation of the NSA against him by the UP government and accused its rivals of "political conspiracy".

BJP leader L K Advani told TOI the use of the tough law was unjustified. "He (Varun) had not done something for which the NSA, used during Emergency, had to be invoked. It reminds people of how leaders like George Fernandes and Nanaji Deshmukh, behind bars during Emergency, fought elections from jail and won with handsome margins," Advani said. He said the application of the NSA is a conspiracy by the UP government.

His party colleague Arun Jaitley said, "Depending on forensic evidence of the speech, you may or may not file prosecution on the speech... but to go to this extent... is disproportionate, vindictive and abuse of power." Terming invoking of the NSA against her son Varun as "misuse of a serious law", BJP MP Maneka Gandhi said such a practice could be very dangerous for the country. "What has happened with Varun is injustice to him and injustice to the country because misuse of such a serious law is, I think, very dangerous for the country. Let us see what happens now," she said.
