If the genuine problems of the Brahmins in the district are not looked into, if their basic needs are not met and if the economically backward among them continue to be neglected by the Government and the administrative set-up, they will have no other option but to take to the streets.

A decision on these lines was taken at an urgent meeting of the Mayurbhanj unit of Orissa State Brahmin Mahasabha recently. The warning came at the end of the meeting, as almost all of those who participated in the deliberations spoke of continued negligence of their community by different successive political establishments.

Though a large number of Brahmins living in different remote areas of the district have been languishing in a state of poverty and deprivation since long, no administrative measure has been initiated so far to ameliorate their conditions, the speakers alleged. In the field of receiving education and employment also, they are still far behind. Justice must be meted out to these underprivileged sections of the society without any further delay, they demanded.

The meeting discussed, among other things, organising sacred thread ceremonies of poor Brahmin boys' and holding mass wedding functions for poor Brahmin grooms and brides.

The Brahmin leaders also emphasised the need of popularising Vedic culture, Vedic knowledge and Vedic rituals among new generation Brahmins.

The meeting was held in the local Sri Raghunath Jew Math premises was presided over by Baidyanath Mishra and was attended by Basanta Kumar Acharya, Hrudananda Acharya, Dolgovinda Dash, Arun Mishra, Nityananda Dash, Achyutaya Prasad Mohapatra, Susanta Kumar Panda, Gouri Shankar Panda, Gopal Krushna Hatial, Chittaranjan Panda, Harish Panigrahi, Bhagabat Panda, Akshay Kumar Kar, Samiran Panda, Sudhakar Sarangi, Harekrushna Kar and many other Brahmin leaders.
