Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray on Thursday extended his support to Babasaheb Purandare as the chief consultant for the proposed memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Arabian sea.

Thackeray has alleged that Congress-NCP is backing the communal forces who are demanding removal of Purandare as the consultant. "Is being a Brahmin Purandare's fault? He has spent his life in research and writing on Shivaji Maharaj and not the Peshwas. People like Purushottam Khedekar and Vinayak Mete do not have the right to speak against Purandare," Thackeray said in a statement.

He warned that if Khedekar tried to harm Purandare many people would retaliate. "Everybody knows who is backing Khedekar. But he should understand that his well wishers will not be able to save him against a public outcry," he said.

Thackeray also lambasted Congress leader Hussain Dalwai, who has alleged that Purandare painted Shivaji Maharaj's image as anti-Muslim. "Shivaji Maharaj fought with four rulers. What can Purandare do if all these rulers were Muslims? Should he write the history by changing the Muslim rulers' names? Babasaheb has written well about the Muslims who stood by Shivaji Maharaj. It seems that Dalwai has not read history," he said.

Maratha organisations have demanded to remove Purandare as the chief consultant for the memorial alleging that he has tarnished Shivaji's image through his speeches and writings based on fictitious incidents.
