Police on Saturday night arrested Shankar Satlingappa Mhetre, the brother of Maharashtra Minister of State for Rural Development, Siddaram Mhetre, from Belgaum on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border in connection with the murder of a BJP worker in Shegao village of Akkalkot Assembly constituency a few days ago.

He had been absconding following the death of BJP worker Bhimanna Kore after he was allegedly attacked by Congress workers during the election campaign of BJP candidate Siddramappa Patil.

Rural police traced Shankar Mhetre to Belgaum and arrested him in a raid on Saturday night, police said. Solapur Superintendent of Police Sureshkumar Mekala on Sunday confirmed the arrest.

With the arrest of the minister's brother, the number of people arrested in the case has reached 11. Police have registered a case against 28 accused.

The killing had led to protests from the BJP, whose leaders had met the Maharashtra Governor seeking action against the minister, who is the Congress candidate from Akkalkot. The minister has also been named in the complaint registered by the police.

Sources said that the minister, whose anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a local court, has approached the High Court, which was likely to take a decision on his plea on Monday.

The minister's father, who claimed that his son was falsely being accused in the case, on Sunday led a delegation comprising former dairy development minister Anandrao Deokate and Ashfaque Badurgi to meet Maharashtra Chief Secretary Johny Joseph.
