A group of teachers of the Delhi University have written to the President against the reported 'anti-national' slogans raised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The letter urged the President to order a probe into not just the controversial incidents but also into the conditions that led to them.

The letter, dated Thursday, was signed by VS Negi, the general secretary of the National Democratic Teachers' Front (NDTF) of Delhi University. It comes days after a group of teachers of IIT-Madras wrote a similar letter to the President.

The letter said while the NDTF fully supports freedom of speech, right to dissent and freedom for presenting alternative paradigm, it stands firmly opposed to creating an environment against the unity and territorial integrity of the nation.

"What happened in JNU on 9th February, 2016 cannot be condoned on the pretext of freedom of speech and freedom of dissent," read the letter.

It also noted that the "same elements" had earlier celebrated the massacre of 76 CRPF soldiers by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada.

The letter urged the President to intervene and order an impartial probe, in which those found guilty would be severely punished and no innocent would be implicated.

"The whole of JNU cannot be blamed for doings of these seditions (sic) elements who are desperately trying to exploit the privileges offered by the premier national university for Jihadi and terror activities," read the letter.

"There should also be comprehensive enquiry into activities inside JNU which have led to the present situation," it added.
