Not able to reconcile with the crushing defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, the Communists and their cohorts in the media have launched a slanderous campaign to malign the image of the young, dynamic and energetic Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Deb.

His suggestion to the educated unemployed youth in Tripura to rear cows instead of running after the government jobs, was ridiculed in the media. It was the Managing Director of AMUL, R S Sodhi who came to his rescue by endorsing Deb’s suggestion.

A recent case is in the limelight again and this is regarding twisting the speech of the Chief Minister Biplab Deb given on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti in Agartala.

The Telegraph, a leading English daily, in its print and electronic versions dated May 1, 2018, published the distorted speech of the Chief Minister captioned “Buddha walked to Japan: CM”.

The similar report was published by the reputed news agency PTI on May 1, 2018. PTI captioned the news as “Buddha walked across India to spread peace: Tripura CM”.

In the second paragraph of this news report, the Chief Minister has been quoted as saying “Gautam Buddha had spread the message of peace, harmony and prosperity by walking across India and going places that are now known as Myanmar, Japan and Tibet”.

The Government of Tripura immediately darted a rejoinder to both The Telegraph and the PTI asking them to correct the mistake they had committed in reporting the speech.

In his official letter No. F No 1(2)/CMS/2018 1st May 2018, Dr Milind Ramteke, Additional Secretary to the Government of Tripura, wrote to the Editor of The Telegraph and the Editor in Chief of PTI that the speech of the Chief Minister was ‘misinterpreted’ and published in the newspaper and the news agency report.

The letter said that the Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Deb had delivered a short speech at a Buddha Mandir in Kunjwan, Agartala on the occasion of Buddhaayanti on Monday, April 30, 2018. “Your esteemed newspaper (print & online) has printed and published a news article “Buddha walked to Japan: Deb” which is misinterpretation of the speech delivered by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tripura”, the letter said.

The letter further said that the video clip available with the Government of Tripura, it was clear that the Chief Minister had said that Lord Buddha gave his message of peace and prosperity on foot in the then Bharat Varsha which (the message of peace & prosperity) has reached today’s Myanmar, Japan and Tibet.”

The speech of the Chief Minister was entirely correct from the historical point of view and it was clear that speech was misinterpreted by your esteemed newspaper and the agency, the official letter said.

The letter asked the newspaper and news agency to ‘rectify and reprint’ the same immediately so as to ‘prevent any wrong and distorted interpretation’ of the speech of the Chief Minister.
