Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra today said the United States was being hypocritical, a day after space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) termed the space debris generated by the recently conducted Anti-Satellite missile (ASAT) test by India as a 'terrible thing'.

Anand Mahindra tweeted, "A case of the pot calling the kettle black." Till now, Mahindra's tweet has been retweeted by 3,100 people and 8,500 have liked it.

On 27 March, India achieved a historic feat by shooting down its own low-orbit satellite with a ground-to-space missile, making the country a space superpower. Only three other countries—the US, Russia and China—have ASAT capabilities.

On Monday, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said India’s move to shoot down of one of its own satellites was a "terrible thing" as it created about 400 pieces of orbital debris, according to a PTI report. The NASA chief warned that the risk of debris colliding with the International Space Station (ISS) had risen by 44% since India’s anti-satellite weapon test.

Reacting to Nasa's comment, Anand Mahindra tweeted, "From a nation that created most of the debris in space over decades, this is an audacious statement...."

India had said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure there were no space debris. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back onto the earth within weeks," PTI quoted the Ministry of External Affairs as saying soon after the test.
