Anupriya Madhumita Lakra, a daughter from Maoist-affected Malkangiri district of Odisha, sets her wings to fly in the sky. She is the first tribal-woman from Odisha to become a commercial pilot.

Anupriya completed her schooling from Missionary School in Malkangiri town, and higher secondary from a school in Koraput district. In 2012, she took admission in the Government Engineering College of Bhuvneshwar. But a few months later, she realized that she belonged to the skies. So, she enrolled at the Government Aviation Training Institute (GATI) in Bhuvneshwar.

With sheer determination and hard-work, she became a commercial pilot. 27-year-old Anupriya will soon join Indigo Airlines as a co-pilot. Initially, she will be posted at Singapore.

Her father, Mariniyas Larka, a police constable in Malkangiri district said; “Though it was difficult for me to fund her pilot training, I took loans and got help from relatives. I always ensured that my daughter gets an education in the field she wanted to.”

Jimaj Yashmin Lakra, Anupriya’s mother said; “We had to take loans to meet her study expenses for over 7 years. She had to appear in several examinations to get the commercial pilot’s license. But we never stopped her from dreaming big”

She added: “We are happy that she has become what she always dreamt of. My daughter has not only made our family proud, but she is the pride of the entire state. I want my daughter to be a source of inspiration for all girls. I urge all parents to support their daughters.”

The Tribal leader and the President of Odisha Adivasi Kalyan Mahasangha, Niranjan Bisi said; “In a district that is yet to see a railway line, it is a matter of pride that a tribal woman will now fly a plane.”

Naveen Patnaik, the Chief minister of Odisha, congratulated Anupriya for her achievement. His tweet on social media read; “I am happy with her achievement. She will be a role model for several girls.”

Kudos to her parents for giving her wings to fly. And kudos toAnupriya Madhumita Lakra, as she had a thousand of reasons to ‘NOT’ but only one reason ‘TO’ follow her dreams, that is ‘Her PASSION towards flying in the sky and her AMBITION to become a pilot.’

Anupriya, ‘Sky is not the LIMIT!’ Fly high, India is proud of you!
