The SIT probing the fake madrasa cases in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh and Mirzapur has lodged FIR against 21 for running fake institutes and getting grants in crores from the government.

Many madrasas were granted approval without physical verification in 2009-10 when BSP’s Mayawati was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

The madrasas in Azamgarh and Mirzapur districts of the state existed only on paper.

Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012-17. The scam was unearthed in 2017 when Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister in March 2017.

CM Yogi ordered an SIT probe in the matter.

250 madrasas in Azamgarh and 143 in Mirzapur were investigated.

After the scam came to light in 2017, the Yogi government had stopped the grant to these madrasas.

The SIT has also sought permission for FIR against more people in the case.
