The Quran-Hindi Society India on Sunday asked the union
government to take stringent action against noted artist,
M F Hussain, if he is found to have denigrate Hindu
deities in his paintings, reports PTI.

"India is a secular nation and here no body has the right
to hurt anyone's religious feelings," Farooq Argali, the
society's founder General Secretary said in a press
statement here.

Condemning Hussain's `indecent' paintings in question,
Argali said the Quran prohibited Muslims from denigrating
the deities of other religions.

Appealing to the Sangh Parivar not to take the paintings
seriously, Argali said Hussain did not represent the
community's sentiments and his works should be seen only
as "the outpourings of a sick mind."

"Making it (the paintings) an issue against Muslims would
only harm the BJP's image as the Hindus at large are in
the know of the Meanwhile, the Mumbai police are inspect-
ing a series of paintings by Hussain, which allegedly
depict `Hindu deities in an objectionable manner', fol-
lowing a letter sent by Maharashtra Cultural Affairs
Minister, Pramod Navalkar to City Police Commissioner R D
Tyagi on Friday seeking Hussain's arrest for drawing
pictures in an obscene manner.

The minister had pointed that some women's organisations
drew his attention towards the photographs of the paint-
ings carried by the Bhopal-based Hindi magazine "Vichar
Mimansa," edited by V S Vajpayee, in September issue.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, has also
threatened "some sort of action" against the renowned
painter, even as a series of suits has been filed in
different courts in the state seeking criminal action
against Hussain.
