Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Prof. Rajendra
Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) today said that the Indian polity
had become steeped in corruption and there was urgent
need for greater activism by good persons to cleanse it.
The septuagenarian RSS leader was speaking on the current
political scenario at a meet organised the RSS Delhi unit
at the Vithalbhai Patel House grounds here.
While several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in-
cluding Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma were
present at the meet, there appeared no matching enthu-
siasm among the people. The meeting itself was not well
attended with several rows of chairs at the venue remain-
ing vacant right through it.
Referring to corruption in high places, Prof. Singh said
that from the Bofors scandal to even the fodder seam,
virtually no area seemed to have been left untouched by
this growing corruption evil. Without actually naming
former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, he said that the
situation had deteriorated to such an extent that there
were three cases involving a former Prime Minister now. -
Flanking Prof. Singh were joint general secretary RSS Dr
Suresh Vajpayee and RSS Delhi chief Satyanarain Bansal.
Attending the meet were former Delhi Chief Minister Madan
Lal Khurana, MP Vijay Kumar Malhotra, senior part leaders
Sikander Bakht, J. P. Mathur, BJP Delhi chief Kedar Nath
Sahani, Delhi Ministers Jagdish Mukhi, Rajendra Gupta,
Lal Behari Tewari and Dr Harsh Vardhan.
While expressing concern about the downslide in political
values Prof. Singh, however, said it was a positive
trend that good persons in various fields were now becom-
ing more active. In this context, he specially praised
what he described as the boldness and uprightness of the
judiciary.
He also praised the steps taken by Chief Election Commis-
sioner T. N. Seshan, which had minimised expenditure
during elections.
The RSS chief said that even 50 years after Independence
the condition of the country was far from satisfactory.
Calling for introspection on the reasons for this, he
-said that there were three major reasons for this. One,
the country had failed to go along the right direction,
two greater stress ought to have been given to strength-
ening nationalist feelings, and lastly a result-oriented
work culture had been destroyed. India ranked prominent-
ly in the list of nations where corruption was high, he
added.
He stressed there was urgent need for correcting this
situation if the country was to be directed to the road
of progress. Prof. Singh elaborated - the need for making
Hindi the main working language in the country adding
that higher education and even technical education medium
of teaching should be Hindi. This, he admitted, would not
be easy but if there was determination and political will
it could be achieved.
He also called for greater efficiency and honesty in work
culture underlining that without hard work nothing could
be achieved. He justified the importance given by the RSS
and others on the need to build the Ram Mandir at Ayod-
hya. The temple may not remove poverty, but it was essen-
tial in other respects, he said. Regular visits to a
temple infuse inspiration and gives greater inner
strength, he said.
Earlier, addressing the meet Dr Vajpayee said that the
RSS had consistently and persistently worked towards
uniting people on projects in their larger interest.
