The First Anniversary of the Non-Formal Education Centres run by Seva Bharati
was held at Nellore (Andhra Pradesh) with great enthusiasm in Kasturidevi
Girls High School on December 25. Nearly 200 students studying in these
centres and in Schools for Child Labour and a number of people participated
in the anniversary.

Shri L.V. Narasa Reddy, the District President of Seva Bharati, presided. In
his presidential address he called for generous contributions to continue the
project without financial hurdles. Dr Haranath, project officer. Child
Labour Eradication Project, lighted the lamp. He praised the work of Seva
Bharati and asked the non-governmental organisations to emulate it. He
wanted the NGOs to visit the Child Labour Centres run by Seva Bharati at
Deendayal Nagar, Nellore Town and Buchireddipalem.

He felt that it was disgraceful for the civilised society having thousands of
children languishing in slums and colonies without education and proper care
and urged the audience to donate liberally in cash and kind.

The chief guest Dr N. Nageswara Rao, Joint Collector, appealed to Seva
Bharati to take up more such projects and wished for its success. He
promised all round help.

He also released a book for the students in Non-Formal Education Centres.

Project Officer of Seva Bharati, Shri Java Rama Raju in his. report said,
that with the inspiration of late Bala Saheb Deoras, the third Sarsanghchalak
of RSS and late Shri Somayya Garu of Kshetriya Seva Pramukh, Seva Bharati had
started its work in 1991. It received encouragement and guidance from the
then Nellore Collector, Shri Giridhar, R.D.O., and Kum. Shri Devi and Seva
Bharati took initiative to start the Non-Formal Education Centres and two
Child Labour Schools. The kind co-operation of the present District Collector
Shri Sambasiva Rao, Joint Collector Shri Dr N. Nageswara Rao, and D.E.O. Shri
Sudarsan Varma were praiseworthy he said.

The Secretary? of Seva Bharati Dr C.L. Narasimha Rao disclosed that one
hundred Non-Formal Education Centres with 2674 students are being run by Seva
Bharati in this district. The students include 1085 S.C. boys and girls, 626
S.T. boys and girls, 313, B.C.'s and 650 fishermen. Besides these centres two
child labour schools with 100 students are also managed by Seva Bharati.

He said Seva Bharati has rendered yeomen's service to the cyclone affected
people in Nellore district by serving food, utensils and clothes.

Shri Suryanarayana Rao, Akhil Bharatiya Seva Pramukh of RSS, applauded the
organisers and congratulated the boys and girls who participated in
anniversary celebrations. He explained that RSS believed that from
Kanyakumari to Kashmir all the people were one and the same. With this
ideology. RSS works to unite people irrespective of caste, creed, province,
language and religion. Seva Bharati is running many service projects in
remote parts of the country and in SC/ST backward areas to uplift the poor
and downtrodden to make them socially and financially strong and patriotic.

He said that government was trying to remove the imbalances by enacting
reservations. But unfortunately now-a-days every one is clamouring for
reservations. Political parties for the sake of vote-bank were creating
conflicts and rift among the people. He however emphasised that helping the
"unfortunate, poor and downtrodden is not charity or pity, or kindness or
greatness but it is our sole duty and responsibility".

Dr Ashok Rao of Seva Bharati proposed a vote of thanks.
