In our country, we have often witnessed a slanging match between
the "secularists" and "saffronites", leaving the common man to
analyse the nationalistic credentials of these outfits. Compare,
for example, the last general election held in India with the
recently concluded one in Pakistan.
In 1996, there was a strong demand from the Indian public to hold
elections in February so that the fiscal crisis could be averted.
But both P V Narasimha Rao and T N Seshan said it would be prudent
to sacrifice our fiscal - and constitutional - duties in
preference
to the religious needs of Muslims who constitute 12 per cent of
the
Indian vote bank and who fast during Ramzan.
But the Pakistanis voted recently in the month of Ramzan and, mind
you, Muslims there constitute a vote bank of 95 per cent!
At least now will our secular brigade explain why they misled the
India masses in the name of safeguarding the rights of Muslims?
