The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) feels that the internal
contradictions within the United Front (UF) would come into play
soon and ensure the fall of the new Government.
In the BJP's parliamentary party meeting on Sunday, senior party
leaders said the Government formed on the foundation of mistrust
and deceit would not last long. BJP leaders felt that the growing
acrimony within the UF would trigger a favourable situation for the
BJP.
Apparently, the party is keen to exploit the situation in its
favour. "This Government will be more short-lived than the one
headed by Mr Deve Gowda." BJP vice-president K L Sharma said.
Mr Sharma pointed out the contradictions and mutual distrust within
the various constituents of the UF. He said they were evident right
from the beginning. "All political groups of the UF are suspicious
of one another," he pointed out.
Referring to the commitment to the "so-called secularism" by the UF
and the Congress, Mr Sharma asked it the defeat of the Deve Gowda
Government was not the defeat of a secular government. "They (the
UF) owe an explanation to the nation," he said.
BJP sources say party leaders view the emerging scenario as
favourable for the party's growth in Southern states where the
party consistently failed to break fresh ground. Particularly, the
feud between the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) and the Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagham (DMK) is being watch in the BJP circles with
curiosity.
A senior party leader maintained that though the party was keen to
win over an ally in Tamil Nadu, it would like to exercise extreme
caution in choosing one. "We are sure that the southern parties
will shed off their inhibition and join the BJP soon after this new
experiment fall through," a senior party leader said.
However, the party leadership has decided to use the time to gear
up its cadre to face this period of political uncertainty. Mr
Vajpayee said the BJP would participate in debate on the Confidence
motion on Tuesday.
Mr Vajpayee is also trying to ensure perfect floor-coordinations
with allies during the debate and held discussions with Akali and
Samata leaders. Senior Akali Dal leader Singh Barnala said his
party would have coordination with the BJP during the discussion.
As a part of the floor-strategy, the BJP and its allies are likely
to put pressure on the Government to take up other unfinished
agenda of Parliament along with the Finance Bill. The BJP would try
to put the Government in the dock over the pending bills pertaining
to reservation for women in legislature and the Lok Pal Bills, BJP
sources say.
