The Tamil Nadu Government is likely to clear a proposal to set up an 'X'
branch on the lines of the 'Q' branch, in the state police set-up, to deal
with the Muslim fundamentalists.

The police department is working out the modalities of including the new
department in the set-up. The proposal comes in the wake of the rise in
activities of some Muslim fundamentalist organisations and several Muslim
political parties which show leaning towards the fundamentalists. Police
officials are concerned over the sprouting of several Muslim fundamentalist
organisations in various parts of the state, bringing in its wake communal
problems. Reports of activities of the fundamentalists being primarily
instrumental in raking up communal clashes in Coimbatore and Melapalayam,
have been received by the police. Melapalayam is said to be another base
for such elements, on the lines of Coimbatore.

As police have confirmed the influence of Pakistan-based ISI on the
fundamentalists outfits in Tamil Nadu, they are now taking the issue far
more seriously than before.

The 'X' branch would be headed by two Superintendent of Police. But it is
learnt that one of them had refused to take over the new responsibility on
personal grounds.

Ravikumar, presently SP, Perambalur, regarded as an expert in dealing with
Muslim fundamentalist organisations, is likely to the replacement. Sources
said that the city police has sent a detailed report about a particular
Muslim fundamentalist outfit to the State government, particularly the need
to prevent its leader from staying within city limits.
