Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Rajendra Singh on Thursday urged
the Muslim community to give up claim to the three holiest of holy shrines
of Ayodhya, Kanshi, and Mathura.

"They (Muslims) know that thousands of temples were destroyed. Foreign
Muslim aggressors destroyed thousands of our sacred temples and heaped
insults on centres of our devotion. Out of the remaining such temples, only
three sacred temples are being demanded to be handed over to the Hindu
institutions," Prof Rajendra Singh told a mammoth gathering of RSS
activists and invitees at a special function to pay homage to Mother India
and Mahatma Gandhi at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

During an hour-long speech, the RSS chief detailed the run up to the Ram
Janmabhoomi agitation and to the December 6, 1992 demolition of the
disputed structure at Ayodhya, to lay the blame entirely on former Prime
Minister P V Narasimha Rao, his associates and the Congress party. "Some
conspiracy was hatched by December 3," Prof Rajendra Singh said recalling
the meeting he had with Mr Rao on that day.

The RSS chief said that he had pleaded with Mr Rao to ensure that the court
judgement on the Ayodhya dispute came before December 6. Surprisingly, the
news of the postponement of the judgement to December 11, well after the
muhurat of karseva on December 6 appeared in some newspapers. Prof Rajendra
Singh interpreted this as a "conspiracy hatched by the Congress" to later
on blame the Sangh parivar for any untoward incident that may occur in
Ayodhya on December 6. "Narasimha Rao is also responsible for the halt in
the work of the construction of the Ram mandir at Ayodhya," the RSS supremo
asserted.

The RSS activists and invitees began pouring into the Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium from early morning. However, because of the early hour, people were
still entering the stadium even after the RSS chief began to address the
gathering. Almost all the stands of the stadium, which has a seating
capacity of 80,000 people, were packed, forcing the organisers to allow the
invitees into the grounds. A rough estimate by a police officer on duty
put the crowd figure between 1.25 lakh and 1.50 lakh.

Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, dressed in the regulation RSS
uniform of white bush-shirt and khakhi shorts, was at the main gate to
receive the special invitees and senior RSS leaders. Before the RSS chief
rose to speak, the RSS activists performed drill and offered prayers.

Addressing the gathering from a podium erected below the seating enclosure
of Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Jyotishpeeth Swami Vagudevanand Saraswati,
Prof Rajendra Singh went onto lambast the "slavish mentality" of the
countrymen and women that is putting hurdles in the path of the country's
progress.

Gandhiji, he said, had awakened the whole society with the aim of attaining
Swaraj. Along with this, he also wished to bring about the right type of
changes and development in all walks of our social life and the
swadeshi-model of post-Independent Bharat. But sadly, the present-day
politicians have twisted the meaning of Gandhiji's ideals and objectives to
fulfil their own petty personal and selfish benefits, he said.

The same set of politicians, he said, had recently in the special
Parliament session brought out all that was wrong in the country and
identified the basic problems confronting the nation - that of poverty,
unemployment, education and health. But none of them gave practical
solutions as to how best to overcome the same. "The society should itself
find some answers," he felt.

Moving onto economic issues, Prof Rajendra Singh said: "Our country cannot
make progress on the basis of foreign capital or foreign technology." The
country does not lack in natural resources or human resources or even
capital. What the domestic industrialists should do is to invest in
research and development and strive towards achieving the twin objectives
of producing quality products and selling them at competitive prices. If
quality goods are available at cheaper prices, the countrymen and women
would prefer Indian goods, he said, urging them to overcome the attraction
of foreign goods.

For production of certain items, the domestic industrialists can pool their
resources to take on the MNCs and big foreign companies. But for this, the
industrialists should develop a spirit of cooperation.

Referring to the security environment, the RSS chief expressed concern over
the situation and demanded that the - country should develop nuclear
weapons to tackle Pakistan. The neighbouring country is waging a proxy war
with India, he asserted. "India should not give up its missile programme
and it should also develop weapons to counter the threat by Pakistan."

The RSS chief also criticised the 'Gujral doctrine,' and said that It was
unable to tackle the country's security problems effectively. The doctrine
has inherent contradictions and has been unable to counter Pakistan's
tirade against India," he added.
