State Transport and Cultural Affairs Minister Pramod Navalkar
believes the M F Husain controversy is a thing of the past, while
the city police will go ahead and record Husain's statement today.
Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, R S Sharma told MID-DAY that M
F Husain was back from London, his statement will soon be recorded
in connection with his painting of goddess Sawaswati, that had
created a furore in October last.
The Crime Branch had registered a case against Husain under section
295 A of the Indian Penal Code for "hurting the religious
sentiments of a certain class of society."
Navalkar, however, said this morning that the matter could be
forgotten. "When the incident took place, I received
representations from people which I passed on to the police. After
that, Husain tendered an apology. I feel that considering his age
and standing, the incident should be forgotten."
He added, though, "However, since the matter is now with the
police, let us not interfere."
