Dr Karan Singh on Friday asked minorities in Jammu and Kashmir give up
sit-ins and demonstrations and instead voice their views in a proper way.

In a statement here, Dr Karan Singh, who was recently elected to the Rahjya
Sabha after the ruling National Conference supported his candidature, said
the minorities should air their views on autonomy and other related issues
before the Regional Autonomy Committee, which was recently constituted by the
Farooq Abdullah government. Eminent scholar and state activist Balraj Puri
heads the special committee which would study issue of sub-regional autonomy
within the framework of greater autonomy the NC had promised to the state
people during its election campaign last year. Dr Singh is the chairman of
the Jammu and Kashmir Autonomy Committee.

He, however, maintained that the minorities in the state should received the
same protection and privileges within the state as are extended to them in
other parts of the country implying the demand of a section of Kashmiri
pandit community that a separate homeland for them be created in north and
east of the Valley was unacceptable. Panun Kashmir, the organisation which
strongly supports the idea of separate homeland for Pandits, on Tuesday
announced a nationwide direct action programme.
