Sir,

Ref Shri Amulya Ganguli's "Ayodhya aftermath" (Oct 27) and the wonderful response given by Shri M V Kamath in "Assertion of self-respect (Nov 11). Let me add to what Shri Kamath has said. First, the quote of Shri Arnold Toynbee, about the Poles bringing down a Russian cathedral built during the time of the occupancy of Poland, used by the BJP is defined by Shri Ganguli as "virtually unknown". It is from a speech given by Shri Toynbee under the aegis of Azad Memorial Lecture, and is compiled by the Natio
al Book Trust. It was reproduced in the White Paper brought out by the BJP in April 1993. Merely because Shri Ganguli has not come across it earlier, does not make it 'virtually unknown'.

Second, he likens the events of December 6, 1992, with the burning of churches belonging to the blacks in the USA by white supremacists. Actually, the white supremacists should be associated with the Moghuls and other Islamist invaders of this country. This is what Will Durant had to say: "The Mohammedan conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precarious thing, whose delicate complex of order and liberty, c
lture and peace may at any time be overthrown by barbarians invading from without or multiplying within." Of course, for Shri Ganguli this will be 'virtually unknown'.

Third, when negotiations were going on in January 1991, for a peaceful return of the Ram Janmabhoomi site to the Hindus, the VHP had said, "We do not even demand the return of the thousands of places of worship that have been forcibly replaced with mosques.....We merely want three places back, three age-old sacred places. And we would prefer getting them back from the Muslim community, to getting them back by an official decree.....Muslims should understand what kind of message they are sending by insist
ng on continuing the occupation of our sacred places, an occupation started by fanatics and mass-murders like Babar and Aurangzeb. We do not like to think of our Muslim compatriots as heirs and followers of such invaders and tyrants. It is up to them to make a gesture that will signify a formal break with this painful past." Again, for Shri Ganguli this will be 'virtually unknown'.

For the Macaulyan generation, anything said or written by the Sangh parviar should be consigned to the dustbin. But, the people are not to be fooled any more by such an alienated set. It was Shri Ganguli's ideology that has been the ruling paradigm, and this was the reason why the country is in such a mess. But the Ram Janmabhoomi movement has transformed the mood. The likes of Shri Ganguli are very uncomfortable because their power of patronage is vanishing.

Yours sincerely,

(Ashok Chowgule)
