The United States today disagreed that it was China's help to
Pakistan in the nuclear and missile fields that forced India to
go nuclear and held the BJP-led government solely responsible for
the explosions.
Testifying before the Roth Committee on renewal of most favoured
nation or normal trade relations with China, US secretary of
state Madeleine Albright said the BJP's election manifesto had
said that India would go nuclear.
Albright stoutly denied a charge by Democratic senator Daniel
Patrick Moynihan and Republican senator Connie Mack that it was
China's help to Pakistan in the nuclear and missile fields and US
moves towards China which gave the impression of Sino-American
hegemony that pressured New Delhi to carry out the nuclear tests.
She also described Kashmir as the basic issue between India and
Pakistan dating back to partition and referred to her father's
role as a member of the UN Commission on Kashmir, although the
book that he subsequently wrote is being praised these days not
by India but by Pakistan and the Kashmir secessionists. However,
her efforts to blame India for the 'arms race' in the
subcontinent was disagreed by both the senators.
