Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary Giriraj Kishore on
Saturday demanded a probe by the Central Investigating Agency
into the rape of four nuns in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.

Talking to reporters, Mr Kishore said the Centre should hand
over enquiry into the case to the investigative agency even if
the state government did not recommend it.

Decrying the incident, Mr Kishore said those arrested in this
connection "are reported to be converted Christians and members
of the same church."

Alleging that the criminals were being patronised by the local
Congress leaders, Mr Kishore said Madhya Pradesh chief minister
Digvijay Singh was trying to play the Hindu-Christian card and
levelling false charges on the VHP.

Asked if the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had changed its conduct on
directions from Union home minister Lal Krishna Advani, the VHP
leader quipped "Mr Advani has not issued any directions to us."
To a query on the construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, he said
"we will wait till the year 2001. If the court's decision does
not go in our favour, then we will start a nationwide awareness
campaign to press upon the members of Parliament to pass a law
to remove the hurdles in the path of the construction of the
temple."

Meanwhile, in Chennai, the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tamil Nadu
unit on Saturday demanded immediate action against those guilty
of raping the nuns at a missionary in Madhya Pradesh recently,
and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad for justifying the gruesome act.

State unit president K. Jagaveerapandian, in a statement here,
alleged that harassment of minorities had increased after the
BJP-led coalition came to power at the Centre. Accusing the
BJP's front organisations such as the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and
the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of carrying on a misinformation
campaign against minorities by dubbing them as anti-national, he
said this was against the country's interests. He demanded that
the BJP-led government take action to instil confidence in the
minorities' minds.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi factional leader, Prof. Deeran, also
alleged that the nuns' rape was a calculated on part of the
Bharatiya Janata Party against the minorities in order to garner
Hindu votes. Such an act only gave an impression that BJP was
preparing itself for a mid-term poll.
