It seems Sunil Gangopadhyay Is not alone In harbouring such seditious
thoughts. The CPI-M member of the Rajya Sabha and a former finance
minister In the Basu government, Ashok Mitra, is one with him on
Kashmir.
He has this to say about our presence In the state. And at a time
when the Indian soldiers were laying down their lives to throw out the
aggressors from Kargil. Wrote Mitra In a signed article In a Calcutta
paper:
"...India's presence in Kashmir is only as an army of occupation. The
cost of this forcible occupation has been incalculable for the poor
country such as ours... There is now very little to show as an
achievement against the billions of rupees spent in the effort to
maintain Kashmir as an inalienable part of India... No genuine
democrat would go along with the view that you cling to a territory
even when the entire resident population dislikes your presence..."
Hark back to the record of Indian communists at the time of the
Chinese aggression In 1962 or for that matter In 1942 and you will
learn that they are pretty consistent, ain't they?
Ashok Mitra... One with Jyoti Basu.
