For all its ideological aberrations The Hindu remains the most
complete newspaper in India. Thus it was practically the only
newspaper among English language newspapers to report on the sayings
of the Muslim fundamentalistic, cleric Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi,
popularly known as Ali Mian, chairman of the Muslim Personal Law
Board. In a message to his community Syed Nadvi has urged Muslims to
refuse to accept a situation where there is a dilution of their
separate identity as a community. As he put it: "We cannot live in
this country in a situation where we are separated from out Islamic
identity and way of life. We declare that we are not prepared to
accept such a life of animals who want only food and security.."
Addressing a congregation in Lucknow, according to the paper, Ali Mian
turned down a suggesting to pray for the victory of Indian forces
fighting in Kargil, as praying for soldiers would mean to pray for the
defeat of Jehadis..
Islamic fundamentalists are still very much alive in India. But what
prevents our media to report the saying of such people as Ali Mian?
Would that be considered communal?
