The Delhi government told the high court on Friday that a chargesheet against the former Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Abdullah Bukhari, in a sedition case for making anti-national remarks during a speech will be filed soon as the investigation had been completed.

Standing government counsel Mukta Gupta told a division bench of Justices Usha Mehra and K. Ramamoorthy that the opinion of additional solicitor general K.K Sud had already been obtained in this regard after the police completed the probe. Mr Sud was also present in the court during the hearing of a public interest litigation seeking investigation into the sedition cases against Syed Abdullah Bukhari and his son and present imam, Syed Ahmed Bukhari for their alleged anti-national speeches last year. The court disposed of the PIL filed by the Society for Securing Justice after Ms Gupta's statement.

A case under Section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code (sedition) was registered against Syed Abdullah Bukhari with the Kamal market police station for his alleged anti-national speech at the ram Lila Grounds on April 21 last year. Similarly, and FIR under the same section was registered against Syed Ahmed Bukhari with the Jama Masjid police station. The PIL alleged that Syed Abdullah Bukhari in his speech had declared himself as an ISI agent and dared the government to arrest him. The police had registered the cases following filing of the PIL which alleged that Syed Abdullah Bukhari was promoting disharmony in society and attempted to instigate a section to wage war against the country. The petitioner had sought the registration of a case under Section 121 (waging or attempting to wage war against the country), Section 124 (sedition), Section 153 (provocation for causing riots) and Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) against Syed Abdullah Bukhari (UNI)
