KOLKATA, Sept. 29. - The chief minister
today expressed concern over the activities of anti-national forces, including
"ISI and militants in north Bengal". He was addressing IPS officers at
Police Computer Centre in Salt Lake.
Senior IPS officers said they have
been asked to go slow against Simi members in the state. The government
is determined to abide by the Centre's instructions on curbing Simi's activities
in West Bengal.
The DGP, Mr Dinesh Vajpai, met senior
police officers at Writers' Buildings today and conveyed the government's
point of view to them.
The DIG (headquarters), Mr Narayan
Ghosh, said: "We have been asked to take note of all the instructions sent
by the Centre in enforcing the ban of Simi." Many Simi members were arrested
throughout the state today. Nearly 200 locals of the minority community
blocked the crossing of Baguiati and VIP Road this morning to protest against
the arrest of Moulana Inamul Haque, imam of Hatiara Mosque at Rajarhat
in North 24-Parganas.
They demanded the Imam be released
immediately. The demonstrators alleged that police were harassing people
of the minority community.
The two-hour blockade disrupted
traffic. It was lifted after police intervened. The Imam was arrested last
night because of his alleged connection with Simi. Police arrested seven
other persons from Bashirhat and Deganga.
Cong sees red: The state Congress
today criticised the government for taking action against Simi in the wake
of the ban imposed by the Centre.
