Hollywood star and reborn Buddhist Richard Gere on Wednesday evening presented the 'Light of Truth Award' to the "people of India" for the unparalleled contribution to those displaced by the Tibetan diaspora.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Rabi Ray received the award, instituted by Gere's International Campaign for Tibet, on behalf of the people.

"No nation has helped the Tibetans more than India. Its contribution remains unparalleled as the displaced people have not only been able to rebuild their monastic institutions but have also prospered materially", he said.

Earlier, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama gave a discourse on compassion on the concluding day of the Tibetan Festival of Compassion.

Borrowing from his spiritual mentor, Gere equated India with the "Guru" and Tibet with the "chela".
