30 policemen hurt in Bhiwandi clash

More than 30 policemen were injured after an angry mob attacked them following the seizure of 1,000 buffaloes in Bhiwandi in the wee hours of Monday.
 
Eight of the injured policemen had to be admitted to hospital Curfew was clamped on the communally-sensitive powerloom town between 1.45 am and 7 am on Monday following stone throwing on the police by a mob of 1,500 people.
 
The animals were being transported to a slaughterhouse when the police intercepted the vehicles at Wanzarpatti Naka and arrested a few people. Soon a mob marched to the police station and demanded the release of those arrested.
 
According to the police, the mob became unruly and started throwing at them. The trouble started around 11.30 pm and continued for almost two hours.
 
The police resorted to lathi charge and later used teargas. However, the police finally opened fire in the air, which brought the situation under control.
