A scuffle between youth at a hair
cutting salon in the Gaikwad Haveli area near the Jamalpur flower market
in Ahmedabad resulted in a communal flare-up raising tensions in this sensitive
area.
Speaking to The Asian Age, DCP zone
III Vikas Sahay said that a scuffle between a Hindu and Muslim youth led
to tensions and two adjacent laaris, one belonging to a Hindu and another
to a Muslim were gutted.
Cross complaints have been registered
at the Gaikwad Haveli police station here and unofficial sources said that
four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. Sources
said that an altercation between a Muslim youth who went to the salon,
which belonged to a Hindu, resulted in a flare-up.
A Muslim youth Imtiaz who urgently
wanted his hair dressed was allegedly refused due to a large number of
customers in the shop. This soon resulted in a clash after he returned
with a group and started ransacking the shop. Tension mounted in the area
as fruit and vegetable vendors were pelted with stones and they responded
by throwing stones at the mob. Police sources said three people were injured
in the stone-throwing incident. Mr Sahay said the situation is under control.
