Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence
(ISI) agency, it seems, is doing a good job of establishing contact with
Indian Army personnel and extracting "sensitive information" from them.
Cases have been registered against
as many as 63 Army personnel - 46 serving and 17 retired - for having "connections"
with the ISI in the last three years, show latest statistics.
The defence ministry, however,
is not too worried. "Necessary counter-intelligence measures exist to curb
such incidents. However, the security agencies concerned have been sensitised.
Necessary instructions are also reiterated from time to time to all concerned
to neutralise such attempts," said Defence Minister George Fernandes.
The defence ministry said that
the cases involving former Army personnel were being investigated by the
state police authorities concerned. As for the serving personnel, services
of six of them have been terminated, while four cases are being investigated
by state authorities.
Disciplinary proceedings or court
martial are also in progress against 32, while proceedings against another
three have been completed.
