The Kerala Government today took
over the Juma Masjid of Marad from where a huge cache of arms was
recovered and most of the accused, allegedly involved in the May
two massacre of fishermen, were arrested.
District Collector T O Sooraj, in
his capacity as the district magistrate, took over the shrine under
Section 27 of the Police Act in the interest of ensuring peace and
completed the formalities, including assessing of properties, by
afternoon today.
Meanwhile, the police raids at the
beach continued and they recovered two swords, a few other weapons
and a gelatine bomb from the premises of a house nearby.
The Collector informed that the
shrine would be under the charge of Tahsildar V Koyakutty and sub-inspector
P Abdul Hameed of Nallalam police station for a fortnight.
Devotees would be allowed conditional
entry to offer prayers.
Time for prayers would be limited
and fixed and the purpose of the visitors would be scrutinised, he
said.
Police had seized a huge cache of
lethal weapons, many of them with blood stains, and gelatine bombs
concealed inside the shrine near the spot of crime.
Most of the accused were also arrested
from the place of worship.
