In what could end the dilemma of
the Congress on its stand on cow slaughter, the AICC's minority department
has informed Congress chief Sonia Gandhi that the Muslim community would
support such a ban. The party had found itself in a quandary, as it felt
that supporting the ban would hurt the sentiments of minority community
and opposing it would hurt the feelings of majority community.
The department's secretary and former
Rajya Sabha MP Meem Afzal said: ''We are not against a ban on cow slaughter.
There is an attempt being made to create a controversy by saying that our
community would be against the ban.''
Saying that he had consulted various
Muslim organisations on their opinion on the issue, he said: ''There is
a consensus on supporting the ban.''
