As Algeria begins to clear away
the debris from a devastating earthquake -- the government there is prohibiting
Muslim fundamentalists from collecting donations to help survivors.
Algerian officials are trying to
keep the fundamentalists from making political gains at a vulnerable time
for the government.
In the past, the fundamentalist
groups have done well in providing disaster aid. They carried out a relief
effort after flooding in Algeria a year and a-half ago that killed more
than 700 people.
The number of confirmed dead from
Wednesday's quake is now above 22- hundred. More than nine-thousand others
were hurt.
