Police raided a house in northern
Bangladesh and arrested nine alleged members of an outlawed Islamic militant
group that has vowed to establish Taliban-style rule in secular Bangladesh,
officials said today.
Police seized "objectionable documents"
from the men in Chakpota village, 170 kilometers (100 miles) north of the
capital, Dhaka, a police official said on customary condition of anonymity.
The nine are allegedly members of
the Jamaatul Mujaheedin movement. It was banned early this year after it
held rallies and distributed leaflets advocating Islamic rule in Bangladesh,
a country of 130 million who are mostly Muslim.
Chakpota village is close to Jaipurhat
district, where police clashed with suspected Islamic militants early this
month, injuring 17 people. Twenty- two of the alleged militants were arrested
and 55 homemade bombs recovered.
