Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani today said that the world should realize that Pakistan's ISI was promoting terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda and Taliban and should stop helping any such country which aids and abets terrorism.

"Al-Qaeda and Taliban are recognized as terrorist organizations. It is important for India that the world also recognises ISI as an organization which promotes terrorism. If this does not happen the problem will remain", he told a meeting to observe "anti-terrorism day", organized by Delhi Study Group here. Stating that India did not expect any help from the world to fight terrorism it had been facing for over two decades, Advani said at least that the world should not support those nations and organizations which support directly or indirectly terrorism.

Recalling his recent talks with the US leaders when he visited that country in June this year during which they had stated that India was "exaggerating Washington's clout" vis-a-vis Pakistan, Advani said he told the US "no I am making a very realistic assessment. I am not exaggerating your influence. I know what is possible".

He said that Pakistan handed over 500 Al-Qaeda militants to US. "I am happy among the 500 there is no Indian. But when India asked for 20 wanted terrorists to be handed over, Islamabad did not do so". Advani said the September 11 terror attack in US and the subsequent events had brought about a change in the mindset about global terrorism but India had been a victim of the menace for over two decades.

He said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had visited the US in 2000 and had cautioned leaders there that terrorism was a scourge and evil and "even distance cannot provide immunity" to terrorist attacks." This was vindicated by the terror attacks on the World Trade Center the next year.

"Had this been taken with seriousness and followed up with purposeful actions that it deserved, instances like September 11 could have been avoided", he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the September 11 attack also highlighted four basic points - the destructive potential, no nation or place was immune to its threats, terrorism was no longer a localized phenomena but had matured into a well organized, well directed and virtually unstoppable weapon of war and a potent threat to democracy.

Asserting that the fight against terrorism was not against any religion, Advani said he had told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that New Delhi's fight was against terrorism and not against Islam.

"Linking terrorism with any religion is wrong", he said.

As an honour to Param Vir Chakra Abdul Hamid, the hero of 1965 Indo-Pak war, Advani gave Rs one lakh and a citation to the widow of the war hero and also promised to allot a petrol pump to the family.

Seeing a cheerful audience waving the tri-colour in the auditorium, the DPM said that the Government had amended the flag code to enable the common man hoist the national flag.

BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu, who was also present, regretted that some people linked terrorism with some religion and there need for change of mindset.

Secularism ran in the blood of the people, he said but unfortunately every issue, in the country, was looked at through the prism of vote bank politics, he said.

Union Minister for Textiles Shahnawaz Hussain said after the September 11 attack, efforts had been made to link terrorism with Islam. He said people belonging to minority community had occupied top positions in the Indian polity.

Vijay Jolly, president of the Delhi Study Group said that the terrorism aided and abetted by Pakistan was doomed to fail in the face of India's committed resolve to fight its own battle. (PTI)
