India's caste system affects 10
times more people than are affected by HIV/AIDS world wide. And 20 times
more than were oppressed under Apartheid. A battle against India?s Hindu
caste system is raging, and, curiously, conversion to other religions is
becoming the main weapon of this revolution. The battle is yet to come.
For over 3000 years, the Untouchables
of India have been denied their dignity as human beings, and forced to
live, work, and die in sub-human conditions. They are prisoners of India's
caste system, mandated by the Hindu religion, and there are over 180 million
of them. Through the years, they have been called outcastes, "harijans"
(Children of God), "Dalits" (oppressed), or simply, Untouchables. Today,
the Untouchables are fighting for their freedom and dignity by the last
means possible: They are renouncing the very religion that has legitimized
this most ancient apartheid system in the world. They are casting off the
Hindu religion, in favor of Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism and Christianity,
which is igniting a social revolution in India.
