Bharata Natyam and Kathak are among
the South Asian dances that have been introduced as part of the B A undergraduate
dance curriculum at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS).
The dance course, which is the first
of its kind to be offered in Europe, includes a strand in South Asian dance
as a recognised degree with three years of intensive training.
''LCDS is delighted to work hand
in hand with the Akademi (a development organisation working to increase
the practice, understanding and appreciation of South Asian dance in UK)
and the Arts Council England and hopes to produce dance artistes of the
highest possible standard to serve the development of the dance for the
future,'' LCDS director Veronica Lewis said.
The course has been designed in
conjunction with the Akademi and has been developed with the help of dancers
-Stella Uppal Subbiah, who specialises in Bharatanatyam and Kathak danseuse
Gauri Sharma Tripathi.
Auditions are scheduled to be held
from next week for admission to the new course.
