A division bench of the Andhra Pradesh high
court on Monday observed that the current Hyderabad police commissioner was
afraid of taking action against unruly elements in the city.
Hearing a writ petition filed by advocate
and writer G L Narasimha Rao seeking action against three MIM MLAs who organised
and participated in the attack against Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen
in the city last week, the bench commented that the attitude of all political
parties has been the same in dealing with this kind of incidents. They leave
the public at the mercy of such unruly elements, it said.
The bench comprising Chief Justice J G S Singhvi
and Justice C V Nagarjuna Reddy told the government pleader (home) that they
would see the video clippings of the attack on the electronic media and would
"see how far our machinery will remain silent".
"It is a national shame," the bench
said and added : "We are not concerned whether X has done it or Y or
Z has done it. We are concerned about the rule of law. About the duty of our
leaders and machinery when such things take place. Will we start attacking
our mothers and sisters if they do not agree with us?" the bench said.
"Tomorrow, a crowd can come and attack
all the advocates in the high court. Next day, they will attack the assembly.
Parliament has already been attacked. We have seen such hooliganism in Delhi,
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh," the bench said. "Do we still have
any respect for law?"
