The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) on
Friday issued a fresh threat to Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen, saying
it will "not spare her next time she is around in Hyderabad."
The threat came a day after MIM activists,
led by three party MLAs, attacked Taslima in Hyderabad while she was attending
the launch of the Telugu version of her new novel, Shodh.
On Thursday, the Government of India had accepted
Taslima's amnesty plea and extended her visa by six months.
Anger over the shameful attack over Taslima
is pouring in from across the country. This even as the three Andhra Pradesh
MLAs and four others arrested in connection with the attack were released
on bail.
The three MLAs of MIM and four other party
activists were picked up after the attack on the author during a book release
function at Hyderabad on Thursday.
However, the city police say they were unaware
of her presence in Hyderabad. Police admit it is an intelligence failure on
their part.
Political observers say that the MIM has been
losing its base in the old city of Hyderabad and this incident is seen as
an desperate attempt by the outfit to make its presence felt before the civic
polls.
With this incident, the MIM has rubbed other
Muslim outfits the wrong way. The incident is seen as a desperate attempt
to make its presence felt.
Two nationalist Urdu newspapers Daily Siasat
and Munsif are against the MIM and the party has launched its own Urdu daily
Ehtemal to counter these two dailies.
Another Muslim party MBT is more radical than
the MIM. It is trying to grow and make inroads into the MIM vote bank for
which MIM is worried about its future.
The MIM seems to be in the news ahead of Corporation
polls. It appears that Taslima is being used to settle scores with the local
Muslim political rivals.
Meanwhile, a Muslim cleric on Thursday issued
a fatwa that the face of Taslima be blackened for her alleged comments against
Islam and demanded that she be immediately expelled from India.
