Assam has witnessed a record growth of Muslim population in the country as per 2001 census and if this trend continues, the state is bound to be divided on religion line, said Harendra Pratap, BJP central leader and state observer while addressing a press meet here on Thursday.

Quoting various statistical records, he said that the growth of Muslim population in Assam registered a 12 per cent rate as against less than 3 per cent at all-India level, particularly in eight districts of Assam converted to Muslim majority. Terming that such fast increase of their population is not natural growth but because of illegal Bangladeshi infiltration thereby changing the demographic pattern of the threatening the security of Assam as well as identity crisis of Assamese people, he said.

Today Bangladesh is India's enemy number one and hard steps against that country should be taken as this country has become the centre of all jehadis including ISI, ULFA and other Islamic fundamentalist groups threatening India's peace and internal security', Pratap asserted.

Expressing his surprise on how a new political party MLA could claim autonomy covering three lower Assam districts with majority Muslim population when such provisions are not there in India's constitution, he cautioned the people to be alert against this design.

State BJP president Ramen Deka, addressing the meet said subversive activities in Assam and also India have proved the involvement of people belonging to Islamic fundamentalist groups and blamed the state government for their casual attitude to such a vital issue. He informed that BJP has vowed to uproot Congress and CPM in the Panchayat election and disclosed that if any like-minded party desires to join them they are most welcomed. Rajen Gohain, MP also addressed the meeting.

Earlier, a massive procession was taken out by BJP workers that paraded the main roads of Hojai town carrying banners and chanting slogans and later assemblemed at JK Kedia Bhawan where visiting leaders addressed the party workers of Hojai district BJP.
