Security forces on Monday surrounded a mosque in Jammu & Kashmir, where two separatist militants are holed up, a senior police official said.

Troops of 57 Rashtriya Rifles, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of the State police surrounded the mosque in Papchan village, 56 km from here, in Bandipore district.

"Militants opened indiscriminate fire at the security forces. The fire was returned and the firing continued till late (Monday) afternoon," the officer said.

Police sources said the security forces fired tear smoke shells inside the mosque to eject the militants.

"Efforts are on to nab the militants. However, utmost restrain is being exercised by police and security forces to maintain sanctity of the mosque," a police spokesman said.
